Asia University President Jeffrey J.P. Tsai, along with Professors Gene Sheu and Kuan-Tsae Huang, visited the MIT.nano research center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in August. They were received by Professor Vladimir Bulović, the director of MIT.nano, and Tom Gearty, the Communications and Initiatives Director of MIT.nano. During this visit, the two sides engaged in discussions on the semiconductor industry's development and the latest trends, exploring opportunities for future cooperation.

   MIT.nano has been at the forefront of nanotechnology for many years, continuously upgrading its equipment and facilities to maintain state-of-the-art capabilities. It serves as a shared resource for the entire MIT campus and provides services to various units within and outside the university. The core facilities, instruments, and process laboratories within MIT.nano currently support over 2,000 MIT faculty and researchers in research, material design, fabrication, biosystems, sensors, and various other fields. It is expected to play a crucial role in addressing significant challenges faced by humanity in the coming decades.

   President Jeffrey J.P. Tsai expressed his gratitude to Dr. Lisa Su's father, Dr. Chun-Hwai Su, and the assistance provided by Dr. Mong-Hsun Tsai, the Director of the National Science and Technology Division in Boston. He emphasized Asia University's commitment to actively participating in semiconductor research and strengthening collaboration with MIT.

   President Tsai also highlighted Asia University's successful track record in nurturing talent in the semiconductor industry. The university's semiconductor laboratory, guided by Professor Gene Sheu, has produced numerous outstanding talents who have made significant contributions in both domestic and international semiconductor industries. For instance, an Indonesian graduate student from the Semiconductor Production Research (SPR) program at Asia University, Hutomo Suryo Wasisto, pursued a Ph.D. at the Technische Univ Braunschwig in Germany and was awarded the "2012 European Young Scientist Award" for his outstanding achievements. Asia University has also fostered collaboration between students and various enterprises, providing opportunities for internships at companies like TSMC, Vanguard, and Nuvoton.

   President Tsai mentioned Asia University's partnership with India's SASTRA University in cultivating semiconductor talents. They signed a dual-degree program agreement with the Department of Information Technology at SASTRA University, sponsored by Tata Electronics, where Indian students come to Taiwan to study semiconductor-related courses for 1.5 years, including six months of technical theory and one year of industry internship. The first batch of Indian students collaborated with local Asia University students on semiconductor research, earning the "Best Innovation Award" at the 2022 International Symposium on Engineering and Technology (ISET). This collaboration serves as a platform for both Taiwan and India to nurture high-tech talents. Asia University is also involved in the development of quantum machine learning applications in materials and biomedical fields. Recently, a student achieved remarkable results in the "NTU-IBM Q System 2023 Quantum Computing Competition."

   In January of this year, President Jeffrey J.P. Tsai led a delegation to AMD in the United States to confer an honorary doctorate upon Dr. Lisa Su. This marked the initiation of cooperation between the two institutions, with Asia University planning to establish the first AMD campus laboratory in central Taiwan. This laboratory will serve as a hub for high-speed computing, artificial intelligence, and other fields, nurturing talents for the semiconductor industry.

   Furthermore, Asia University's School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering has excelled in global computer science rankings, placing among the top 300 universities worldwide. It ranks second in Taiwan and first among private universities, demonstrating the institution's academic strength and its ability to help students connect with world-class companies.

   During their visit to MIT, President Tsai and his delegation also visited the Laboratory for Atomistic & Molecular Mechanics and the Media Lab, engaging in discussions with Professors Markus Buehler, Michael Lin, and Cynthia Breazeal, opening up new opportunities for future collaboration between the two institutions.
