Asia University (AU) students from the College of Creative Design won 19 awards in “2022 Red Dot Award: Brands and Communication Design,” a rare achievement for an institute of higher education. Professor Chi-Hsiung Chen, Vice President of Asia University and Dean of College of Creative Design, pointed out that the Red Dot Design Award, known as the “Oscar Award for Design,” is considered the highest achievement in the field of design. As one of the four major international design activities, Red Dot Design Competition attracted more than 10,000 contenders from over 60 countries to participate in this annual event. 51 AU students entered the competition this year and won an amazing number of 19 awards, which surpassed last year’s 11 awards.
Professor Hui-Ping Lu, Chair of Department of Visual Communication Design, reports that the works of her two students Yu-Qiao Chen and Ting-Yu Liao, entitled “Date with Tea,” also won the New York Art Directors Club Annual Awards. AU students’ achievement in design is recognized and doubly confirmed by these two important international design awards.
One of the award winners, Yu-Qiao Chen from the Department of Visual Communication Design, explained how she designed her works “Date with Tea” with the Chinese folk idea of "24 Solar Terms". Using "24 Solar Terms" as the main axis, she created 24 types of tea bags with 6g (one brew) in each bag. The tea leaves are packed according to the nature of each season. The packaging also features Taiwan’s migratory birds for visual effects. One can enjoy tea and get to know the migratory birds in Taiwan at the same time. The outer packaging is mainly made of fishbone folding, which can be folded into a booklet for storage and display, or flattened to hang on the wall. The inside of the package is featured with a traditional Chinese agricultural calendar. Yu-Qiao Chen’s other works, “Tearful Complaint,” also won the Red Dot award.
Po-Sheng Tu, Hung-Ta Chen, Zi-Gin Shieh, Chien Sun and Yen-Ming Huang from the Department of Digital Media Design shared their experiences in designing “1979.RD.”, an interactive game which can detect the change of your perspectives in real life with a gyroscope in a smartphone. With various filters and adjustable focal lens, you can take pictures from any desired angle and with any style. No expertise in photography is necessary. One can create style-rich photos with just a click.
Professor Hsin Hung Lin, Director of Creative Design & Invention Center, said that Asia University stresses the importance of learning via international competition. He wishes to express his gratitude for the support from the university and is more than happy to see his students performing well in the Red Dot Design Competition.
