Asia University has won 16 awards, including the 'National Innovation Awards ' and the ' Excelsior Award,' for five consecutive years

Professor Yu-Cheng Chiang, Director of Asia University's Food Safety and Inspection Center, led a research team that clinched two " Excelsior Award " this year for their "Detection Chip" and "Temperature Control Chip" technologies. This marks the team's 10th award in five consecutive years. Asia University has been actively promoting AI education and research, yielding significant achievements in AI biotechnology and medical technology, accumulating a total of 16 "National Innovation Awards" and " Excelsior Award " over five years.
Established by the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry (IBMI) Foundation in 2003, the "National Innovation Awards" commend outstanding performances in biopharmaceuticals, new medical technologies, medical equipment, and other fields displaying innovative characteristics, technological advantages, and application strategies.
Director Chiang's research team at Asia University's Food Safety and Inspection Center received recognition in 2021 for their techniques of “Development and Application of the Wireless Power Transfer and TTi (Temperature-Time indicator) Semiconductor Chip for the Real-Time Food Safety Monitoring” and “Development and application of gene probes, primers and DNA chips for the probiotic and pathogenic bacteria.” These innovations garnered the team both "National Innovation Awards" and " Excelsior Award " Subsequently, they continued to enhance their detection technologies, winning two " Excelsior Award " for two consecutive years with their "Detection Chip" and "Temperature Control Chip" technologies.

Director Chiang stated that the research technologies developed by the Food Safety Team at Asia University have received support from the interdisciplinary “5+2 innovative industries plan” of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the industry innovation flagship project "Establishing a safe food system: transparency of supply chain." The aim is to establish an integrated system for food safety, traceability, biochips, and their applications within artificial intelligence. The "Detection Chip" boasts rapid, versatile, and label-free features, applicable for rapid testing of emerging viruses, infectious diseases, food viruses, and pathogens. It serves as an emerging interdisciplinary food safety technology platform, combining Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain, digital software, and food safety technology, aiding in promoting food safety and safeguarding public health.
Director Chiang pointed out that the "Temperature Control Chip" has collaborated with well-known domestic food and beverage operators for the development of automated technologies in food safety and cold chain management. This chip serves as a vital virtual and physical integration interface for food safety, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, applicable for regulatory control and monitoring in food safety with extensive utility. The chip-related technologies enable continuous monitoring from the source of food to consumers without interruption. They also facilitate cross-disciplinary and international raw material food safety control, offering benefits unmatched by many current technologies.
Director Chiang mentioned that apart from receiving support from the NSTC and industry-academia collaboration projects, the research team's relevant technological advancements have also been highlighted by the Government Research Bulletin. They were invited to participate in exhibitions such as the BIO Asia–Taiwan exhibition and Future Tech Pavilion Expo. The Food Safety and Inspection Center is driving the development of these emerging technologies to safeguard the health and physical safety of the nation's people, reduce food waste, and promote the hygiene and safety of food products. In the future, they aim to center their efforts around food safety, striving to foster sustainable development that yields positive benefits for the overall environment, society, and economy.
